Fundraising

To go away to Tanzania in June, we need to get together £25,000. Each team member has personally contributed £750 each, leaving us with just over £15,000 to raise. Most of this money will come from grants and we owe and extra big thank you to the University of Glasgow Chancellor's Fund, The Royal Geographical Society, The Jeremy Wilson Trust and the Scottish Mountaineering Trust for putting £3,700 collectively towards our expedition! We are still waiting to here back from the rest of our grant applications but we are confident of securing at least another £4,400 in grants and awards.

However, grants and awards only make up for about half of our £15,000 total. The rest will come from our own fundraising and enterprising endeavours. To get things started we held a Krispe Kreme donut bake sale outside the university library with a few of the other ExSoc teams. We managed to raise £91.96 which is a fantastic total for such a fundraiser!

We then got our thinking caps on and decided to host three big fundraiser events; one in January, one in February and one in March. Firstly we held a pub quiz at Curler's Rest on Byres Road. The night was hugely successful (you can read about it here) and raised £342.45 towards our expedition!

In February, we threw a ceilidh at the Glasgow University Union, raising a whopping £452.10 with a fantastic performance from the Spootiskerry Ceilidh Band to top off a fantastic night!

In March, we held our very own band night, 'Lava Aid' featuring performers from all levels of the earth science course. Everybody was in party-mode and we raised £542.40! You can read our report on the night here.

While these fundraisers exceded expectations and were very successful, we realised that relying on them alone was not going to be enough. We decided that everybody in the team would untertake some sort of sponsored personal challenge or enterprising to raise funds for the expedition. Our very own volcanology expert, Davie Brown, led the way by organising a sponsored cycle up 3 volcanoes in the Canary Islands. So far, he has smashed his target of £1,000 and he is still hoping for more. You can find out more about Davie's cycle and sponsor him here.

The rest of the team then followed in his footsteps by setting their own personal challenges! In April, Andrew, Eadie, Cameron, Joanna and Jack hiked 9 Munros in a single day! Early indications suggest that they will have raised over £600 for their troubles which is an excellent total to add to the pot. Look out for other sponsored challenges coming your way including more Munro hikes from Pamela and Laura, and car boot sales from Aimee and Jonathan. You can sponsor any one of the challenges in our Donate tab! Just leave us a note letting us know that the money is to sponsor a team member for their challenge!

Furthermore, we have started offering limited expedition mercahndise to our donors, including postcards, DVDs and hand-painted artwork of the volcano. We have raised over £500 from this so far and the interest just keeps on growing! Most of our merchandise does have limited availability so check it out and donate soon to avoid disappointment! You can see what we have to offer here.

So far, all of our fundraising efforts have raised over £3,300, and there are still more sponsored challenges to go! This leaves us with a total of around £11,400 out of our £15,000 target.

However, despite all this positivity, we still remain around £3000 short of our total. We are still to hear back from many grant applications, but we simply can not assume that we will get these. That is why we still need your help. Even the smallest donation helps us get closer to our target and every time you share our cause, the likelihood of it reaching somebody that wants to contribute increases. Please visit our donation page and give what you can!
