Jack Timothy – Team Trainer

Jack is a second year Earth Science student who has a love for geology and a particular interest in igneous geology and volcanology, which he developed while studying the 1980 Mt St Helens eruption for his first year essay assessment. Jack also has a keen interest in travel and adventure, having taken part in a volunteer project in Fiji during the summer of 2014, and enjoys sports, in particular football which he currently plays at amateur level with a local team.

The Ol Doinyo Lengai expedition first came to Jack’s attention through e-mail and it appealed to him on all levels, with the academic side of him eager to study one of the most unique volcanoes in the world, and the adventurer in him yearning to experience the wonders of East Africa.

Within the team Jack has taken on the role of Team Trainer. This involves working closely with all team members to ensure they are physically fit and able to meet the demands of the expedition, where they will face a harsh terrain and climate. To achieve this Jack will use his past experience in football to advise the team on healthy living and organise events where fitness can be tested and improved upon.

As well as being Team Trainer Jack will also be heavily involved in the expedition’s. Re-take Photography project. This project will require the repeat photography of several previously photographed sites when on location in Tanzania. In order to complete this task he will need to gather a collection of photographs, while liaising with the owners to obtain their permission, and find out the exact location from which they were taken. Careful planning will then be needed to find the most convenient time during the busy itinerary to take the photographs. Jack is also a member of the risk assessment team and has helped to write and research parts of the risk assessment and prospectus.

From the expedition Jack hopes to gain a range of teamwork to leadership skills, gain valuable fieldwork experience, which will aid him in his goal of becoming a geologist, and to see some amazing sights.
