Laura Gillies – Research Coordinator & Press Officer

Laura is in her fourth year studying Earth Science. She has had a lifelong interest in the subject area and in particular volcanology which she plans on studying further when she graduates. She enjoys and is experienced in field work and undertook a summer mapping project on the Isle of Mull where she gained confidence mapping independently. She is also undertaking an independent lab project this year in which she will study flow banding in lavas and lava-like ignimbrites. She has a passion for outdoors life and travel and has been on a World Challenge expedition to Borneo. This expedition involved jungle trekking, mountain climbing, community work and conservation work. Through this expedition, Laura gained a lot of experience in fundraising and organising events as well as working as part of a team.

Laura will be focusing on the research side of the expedition, concentrating on the volcanology and structural aspects of the area and establishing the best localities for study. She is also the Press Officer, and will deal with local and national media outlets. She has always wanted to study an active volcano and is thrilled to have the opportunity to study the world’s only carbonatite volcano.
