Lava Aid Report

On Tuesday 10th March, we put on a musical showcase at the Record Factory on Byres Road. The night raised a whopping £542.40 and was a fantastic night with each act containing at least one earth science student!

The night ran very smoothly, but only just! Ben had organised the running order for the night including sound-checking times. However, we weren’t quite expecting such a fantastic set-up at the Record Factory and so things took a lot longer to set up than anticipated. This meant that everybody’s sound-check ran behind schedule to the point where Jack (our first act) was sound-checking just five minutes before he was due on! We had another slight glitch when Anna, the keyboard player from Flying Koala (great name), forgot her keyboard stand. We sent Cameron wildly running around Glasgow trying to find a music shop that was still open and could buy a keyboard stand. In the end, we balanced the keyboard on some stools covered in Cathy’s scarf. Cameron showed up five minutes later with a Tesco ironing board as that was the closest thing he could find! We added it to the raffle prizes.

The first act to grace the stage was 2nd year earth science student Jack Rushton, who performed a series of well-known covers for the crowd to enjoy. He was followed by four-piece acoustic act Flying Koala, which Andrew was part of. They played another set of cool and edgy covers and got the crowd fired up for the following act, Pembrooke. They are an upcoming pop-rock act that are turning a few heads in the music scene. Our very own Ben Farrant is their lead guitarist and they treated the audience to a mix of catchy covers and original music. Finally, The Fabric Attractors took the stage. They consist of four 4th year earth science students and they got the party started with a 45 minute set of catchy covers. The 4th year earth scientists had finished classes the previous day and it was nice to see them all come down and celebrate the end of lectures in style.

All in all, the night was a huge success and everybody had a good time. In total we raised £542.40 and I think it’s fair to say: geologists have talent!
