Quiz Night

On the evening of Friday 24th January we held our first fundraising event, a very successful quiz that raised an amazing total of £347.45!

Turning up minutes before the scheduled start time, the team members running the quiz were shocked to find an almost completely full house, obviously our shameless Facebook promotion worked well. With most people seated and a last minute run to the shop for pens (oops), our quizmaster Cameron took the microphone and kicked things off. Despite an uncontrollable microphone volume, the sports round ran relatively smoothly however this was not to last.

Catherine took the microphone for the next round, ‘volcanoes’. All seemed well with the first few questions, though in a room filled with geologist (more specifically, tipsy volcanologists), the factual basis behind Catherine’s questions did not hold up to scrutiny. Ignoring Vo@G’s (Volcanology at Glasgow) angry opposition, the round eventually ended and the answers were marked (Vo@G were leading the pack), it was time for the dingbats round to be handed out and a much needed drinks break.

Cameron’s alternative music round was next with an interesting selection of various musical genres and a controversial ‘song covers’ question to finish. Another alternative ‘drawing round’ followed, where teams were asked to draw their favourite member of the expedition team. This produced some interesting results, with a disturbingly high number of portraits of our very own volcanologist Davie Brown (see images below if you dare).

After another break the final round kicked off called ‘Where in the World?’; a series of 5 clues would lead the teams to a well known location, the quicker they got the location, the more points. Only one team were bold enough to guess on the first clue, but were heavily rewarded for their answer of ‘The Grand Canyon’. Few teams were so successful with the next question with clues leading to ‘The Sea of Tranquillity on the Moon’ and so with some frustration the quiz was over, all that was left was to tally up the scores and draw the raffle tickets! 5 extra points were awarded to the team with the best name; ‘Perfect Cleavage Rocks’, but the overall winners of the quiz (narrowly beating Vo@G with their interpretation of Davie) were The Stawnners!

All in all, the quiz was a massive success and we would like to thank all those who came along and urge everyone to don their kilts and join us later this month for our next fundraiser, the Tanzania Ceilidh!
