Jenny Newall - Leader (focus on Logistics)

Jenny is in her final year studying Earth Science, a subject that has fascinated her from an early age. She thoroughly enjoys her degree and has found all the courses in both Earth Science and Geography very interesting, although fieldwork is certainly her favourite aspect of the subject. This summer she spent three weeks in Kenya working as a field assistant for Helen Robinson, a PhD student studying geothermal systems. This field work re-ignited Jenny’s interest in volcanology as well as inspiring a new-found interest in structural geology. A keen outdoors enthusiast Jenny became involved with the British Exploring Society and went on her first expedition, to Svalbard, in 2011. A fantastic experience, this expedition gave her the ambition and confidence to take part in numerous other adventure and scientific expeditions taking her back to the Arctic, and also to the Himalayas and Africa. Through these many expeditions over the past 4 years Jenny has trained as an expedition leader. In 2nd year Jenny was approached about leading a geology expedition with the Exploration Society and since then it has been an aim of hers to propose and lead a geology expedition. She visited Tanzania in 2012 to climb Mt Kilimanjaro and it was on this trip she learnt about Ol Doinyo Lengai and the seed for this expedition was sewn.

Her role as leader began in July 2014 when she initially proposed the expedition, having assessed the feasibility and logistics. Now that the team is together, she will oversee all aspects of the expedition through working with the leadership team to ensure the overall safety and success of the trip. Her focus is logistical management, however to her the most important thing is team management and ensuring everyone within the team is happy and gets as much out of it as they can. She is excited to be leading this expedition and is very much looking forward to working as part of a fantastic team to fundraise and then accomplish the expedition aims, not only with the Glasgow students but also with the Dodoma students and the cultural experience the collaboration brings.
